This is for the Cape & Cowl Comics anthology (which is shaping up to be brilliant by the way). The theme is immortality so I went for an old school horror kinda vibe. I think I'd opt for an old school horror kinda vibe whatever the theme was but hopefully people will see it as a "Hammer House of Horror" / "Urban Gothic" kind of deal where you're just thrown into a story, get shown a little bit, are left wanting more and can't stop wondering / asking questions. I love that kinda stuff!

Mike Carey Visits Cape & Cowl Comics

Cape & Cowl Comics not only deliver my weekly hit of Batman comics they also have awesome guest stars...

This week it was the excellent Mike Carey!

Yeah, I got some issues signed and had a little bit of a chat with Mike. He told me what's in store for the next year of "The Unwritten". Needless to say I'm cock-a-hoop about what's coming for us fans of the series (Mr Bun's coming back... F***% Yeah!).

I tried not to gush about his exceedingly good "Hellblazer" run, "Lucifer" and the brilliant "Faker". However I may have used the terms "beat the shit out of..." and "awesome..." Why do words fail me at such important moments?

Laura got her "Felix Castor" novel signed too (a book in a comic shop WTF?!!!!).

Cape & Cowl continue to be the best comic store around... God bless the guy who runs it! I actually want to spend my money there and there's always a cool atmosphere. Long live the LCS!

The Zombie War of 1812 has been pencilled and inked, unfortunately I didn't get to add any greytones or blood splatter due to time restraints. However, I'm pleased with how it turned out and I can now play DC Universe Online with a clear conscience.

At first glance this may look like a badly choreographed dance troupe with a penchant for mutton chops, missing teeth and a taste for human flesh. However, it's a zombie sketch in it's various stages of progression - pencilled, inked and bloodied. Hopefully I'm gonna be able to do this for all of "The Zombie War of 1812", time permitting.

After months spent overindulging in pornography and chocolate buttons, reality (that harsh mistress) has finally caught up with me.

It's Friday night and I should be out somewhere snorting cocaine off the breasts of nubile goth chicks but instead I'm at home blogging. Frank Frazetta's dead, a bunch of Conservative upper-class a***holes are in power, I'm not overly fond of the new Deftones album and even worse than that... I'll never be able to afford those cowboy boots. Dark times indeed!

At least I've been shaken from my apathy and I'm restless again, hence the drawing. The sketch above is still in progress and I'll be adding a background to it over the weekend. I need to pull my finger outta my ass and get some more work done for Ross May (The Wheel Turns) and Sean Shapiro (Muzzy), not to mention finish off the short horror stories I've written (one of which is where "Steak House" is from).

The Prisoner - Update

I've been off the grid for a few weeks now due to bleeding from orifices and the acquisition of a new PS3 (Heavy Rain and Yakuza 3 are too good!) so March was far from being a productive month. However, here's a quick update on the status of "The Prisoner". It's appearing in the "Tales From The Comics Experience" anthology which is available here: IndyPlanet

There's a plethora of quality stuff in "Tales From The Comics Experience" including a foreword by Andy Schmidt (of IDW fame). Most excellent I'm sure you'll agree.

Seeing as my weekend comprised of wedding plans, drinking as much booze as possible and watching my MPD-Psycho and animated X-men DVDs I had to stay up 'til F*$% knows when to thrash this bad boy out. Yes, the toilet fascination continues but then again we never claimed to be "high brow" here at LOST IN THE AUTOGANZFELD and by now you all know what you came for.

Anyway, this chap is The Escapist A.K.A "The Pimp" and he'll feature heavily in the awesomness known as "Fiends" (his character bio will be along soon). I'll be posting line art and finished versions of this during the week as well as some more info and character sketches from "The Prisoner". This pasty white prick is "Nosher", A.K.A: "The Regurgitator", A.K.A: "The Meat Funnel" (but that's much later on during his "career" in "film"...Heh).

For the best part of 29 years Nosher lived a life of ignorance and sloth, until he discovered he could swallow and regurgitate just about anything. He then decided to make a name for himself using his "unique gift" on stage...

Unfortunately when he tried out for "Uncle Zodiac's Black Circus" his stomach acids were off kilter due to a bladder infection (which in turn was caused by a rather severe dose of chlamydia) resulting in this failed attempt at his "modern re-working" of pulling the rabbit out of the hat.

Needless to say, Uncle Zodiac was not impressed.

Here's another character from "Fiends". This salty looking dude is Hilarity the Clown. Contrary to his sloth like appearance he is quick witted and exceedingly funny. Trouble is his short temper, wild mood swings (every 28 days or so he becomes Calamity the Clown, more on that at some point later) and filthy comedy stylings; including an almost constant barrage of profanity being emitted from him, make Hilarity the last person you'd want to be entertaining kids.

Feel free to tweak his nipples though.

Fiends - Character Ideas - The Ringmaster

Here's a sketch for an old idea of mine called "Fiends" that I'm in the process of re-vamping.

Back in the day when I was studying animation I had to put together an "Animation Bible" for an original concept. "Fiends" is what I came up with and now I'm re-jigging it as if I was gonna do it as a comic rather than a 2D animation, which basically means adding more detail to the character designs and the look of everything seeing as it no longer needs to be replicated at 24 frames per second. Some of the characters are a bit more depraved now too which I like.

Anyway, this jaunty fellow is Uncle Zodiac - A.K.A "The Ringmaster"... he's like all the fun of the fair with a little bit of androgyny and satanist chic thrown in. Hopefully I'll get to post more character sketches and stuff from "Fiends" in the not too distant future as it's uber fun to draw these characters.

I'm working on "Muzzy" for Sean Shapiro and "The Wheel Turns" for Ross May at the minute. I wouldn't bet against the possibility of seeing some early artwork for either of these at the weekend so stay tuned.

Good news: Robert Heske (of "Cold Blooded Chillers" and "The Night Projectionist" fame) has kindly included "The Ends" (written and lettered by Chris Barker - drawn by me) in the forthcoming "2012: Final Prayer" Anthology.

As you can see there's an ass-load of quality content that's gonna be in the book. It's also cool to see a few familiar names on the list alongside me and Chris, such as Rita Gorgoni and Stefano Cardoselli of Azurek Studio (Check out their recent release from Resolution Comics - Pieces) as well as Shawn Gabborin of Angry Gnome Comics.

Tentative release date: 15th November 2009... Should be good!

Written by Chris Barker (See here!) "The Ends" is a cosmic thrill ride which manages to include a house party, a chick fight, aliens, Hitler and a dinosaur... what more could you want?

Murky Depths #9

"Thanks" to Terry Martin and all the other chaps at Murky Depths. Issue 9 is out now and although we don't have a story in the issue they have printed mine and Chris Barker's profiles for the work we did on "Pilgrimage" which was featured in issue 8.

Murky Depths is always a quality read especially for those who like their Sci-fi a little darker. The latest issue has a cracking cover (as you can see, top right) by Leonardo M Giron. Check it out if you haven't already!

Evening all! Over the last few weeks I've been gorging myself on chocolate and red wine, that's not to say I haven't been drawing, I've just neglected the blog a little.

At the minute I'm working on "The Dark Spot on The Water" for Resolution Comics' "From Here to There" anthology. The characters are looking good (or at least I think they are) and I've got some pencilled pages done which when I get re-acquainted with my scanner will be on their way to my fellow conspirators Ross May and Brian Carr for critique. Speaking of Resolution Comics; everyone should check out this post on their Blog: Creature from the Blog Lagoon where they give me a shout-out (Thanks Scott and Brian!) and mention a (tentative?) release date for "The Layfield Incident". JUNE 19th - Be there or be square!

In other exciting news "Pilgrimage" written by Chris Barker and drawn by me is due to appear in Murky Depths #8. We're listed as contributors for the issue on the site (Link: Murky Depths) and the last I heard the issue is due at the end of this month. As always I suggest anyone reading this scopes out Chris' site: Fictionchris. He's up to all sorts at the minute including writing what sounds like a really cool graphic novel - Shiver.

To top it all off I'm still fitting in work for Joe Sergi (which I promise I'll get to him soon) and "Muzzy" for Sean Shapiro. I also had the insane idea to write something myself (don't laugh) which resulted in "Scream if You Wanna Go Faster" a very pretentious and angry piece of work which I hope to get round to illustrating at some point - in a very different kind of style to what has gone before .

... my attempt at a Super Heroine. She's a little more Kitty Pryde than Power Girl but that's the way I roll! I wanted her to look cute but with a knowing grin suggesting an air of confidence and that she could kick a little ass!

The one on the left is a little more classic comic book in style, with softer curves and the one on the right is more my style but with my brutal edges toned down a little.

...and now for something completely different. I took my Xbox online for the first time at the weekend and when I was updating my avatar / blokey-character thing my original profile was wiped. Crap! Anyway, I thought I'd explain the rather weak Gamerscore I have at the minute (too be fair I only had a previous score of three and a half thousand) and keep my geek hand strong! It's a good excuse to go back and play some classics like Halo 3 and Dead Rising though.

The profanity infused ultra-violence known as House of The Dead: Overkill is stifling my productivity. However, do not fear! Current projects are nearing completion and some new stuff has come rollin' in.

In March I'll be starting on another story for the chaps at Resolution Comics . This time it's an eight-pager for their anthology "From Here to There #3". The story I'll be illustrating is called "Dark Spot on The Water" by Ross May. It's a pretty cool tale of High Strangeness out on a lake in Northern Manitoba and for you water sports fans out there it also involves a spot of canoeing.

Another story I'll be starting on in March is "Muzzy". Recently, I had the good fortune to make the acquaintance of Sean Shapiro. Sean is the writer of "Muzzy" and it's a weirdly cool story about a young boy, his F***ed-up family and the bizarreness that ensues.

The Layfield Incident - Finished

Pencils and inks for "The Layfield Incident" (provided by yours truly) were completed at the weekend... Huzzah! They are now at Resolution Comics HQ ready to be dispatched to Chris Barker for colouring (There is no doubt he'll do a bang up job: Fictionchris).

I've said it once and I'll say it again; I can't wait to see this Bad-Boy finished in glorious colour alongside Brian's words. For further updates on the progress of the book check out their Blog: Resolution Comics

Now that the festivities are over it's about time I scanned some more artwork into the computer (Which I have been avoiding over Christmas and New Year as it didn't seem as much fun as the other things on offer).

Above are two of my favorite pages. I really like the top one because even though there isn't a great deal of action going on it's still a well balanced, nice page to look at.

The other page I like because (I think) the transitions from panel to panel do a really cool job of taking the reader from the living room (and watching the news) through the TV and onto the scene alongside the correspondent.

I'm still getting used to the idea of my work being coloured. I find myself laying down some really heavy blacks at times and then have to reign myself in a bit (sometimes starting all over again). It may be a little weird but the prospect of 24 pages rendered in glorious colour is most definitely an exciting one!

This week I have been mostly inking and scanning. One day I'll do myself a favour and get an A3 scanner. It's a real ball ache scanning pages in two halves and then stitching them together again on the computer. Seems like a boat load of extra work... nightmare!

Thought Bubble - Leeds 2008

Yesterday I was in Leeds visiting the Thought Bubble Comic Convention , part of the Leeds Sequential Arts Festival.

It was good to scope out a lot of the 'Indie' books being published over here in the UK. The quality ranged from the sublime to the ridiculous but seeing as I never really get off my ass, anyone putting out their own book scores major kudos points from me.

I finally managed to meet Christopher Barker in the real world. I was beginning to think he was a digital entity, a consciousness downloaded to the net but it turns out he is made of flesh and bone like the rest of us and is an amiable chap bubbling over with enthusiasm and ideas. Below is pictorial evidence of said meeting. Calm yourselves ladies!

The highlight of the day (other than meeting up with Chris) was meeting Jock and Andy Diggle. I got some stuff signed and came away a very happy chap.

Anyway, I am currently working on "The Layfield Incident" for Resolution Comics. Brian Carr has written this 24 page epic and Scott Bradley is taking on the role of editor. It's a pleasure to be working with them again.

Hopefully Chris Barker will be doing the colours for this little beauty (Yep, I did indeed say colour). He's got a lot going on at the minute, performing writing and colouring duties all over the place. I hope we can get him on board because there is no one I'd like to colour this more.

To top all of this off (and if I'm reading Brian's last post on his blog correctly) the chaps at Resolution are trying to procure the amazing talents of Irene L from Azurek Studios to do the cover for this comic.

In other news: I am applying the finishing touches to a project for Joe Sergi which is looking really cool. It took me a while to find my feet on this one but it's turning out well.

I'm also (still) getting on with Pilgrimage (Sorry Chris). It sure is taking it's sweet time but will definitely be worth the wait.

Bad News: Unfortunately 'From Here to There' will not be out at Super Show. However, Scott and Brian will be there with some previews and original artwork. Anyone going should swing by their table and check it out. I hear they have some killer art from Stefano Cardoselli on display.

Evening all. The pictures you see above are initial character concepts for a new short story I'm illustrating. The story is entitled 'Pilgrimage' and has been written by Christopher Barker.

I have no idea if we'll actually be using these designs for the two main characters as that will be Chris' call but I've posted them up as I rather like them...hope you do too.

My pages for the 'From Here to There' anthology are 'in the can'. I sent them off at the tail end of last week for lettering. It should be due out in September just in time for CGS Super Show.

If anyone wants a copy that isn't going to Super Show I'd suggest swinging by the Resolution Comics website sometime in the next few weeks.

Here's Page 2 from 'The Economy of Scale' for the 'From Here to There' anthology. I haven't had word back from Scott and Joe yet so changes could be made but I hope they like it.

I'm not going to put every page up here on the Blog because I want you all to rush out and buy the comic when it comes out but I will be posting one or two to give you a feel for it (you are only getting half the package here without Joe's excellent writing).

Grrr, Arrrghh! Hear the zombies as they voice their dissatisfaction. That's right folks, the project I'm currently working on DOES NOT INVOLVE ZOMBIES (or sexy looking robot babes)!

This project is going to be really cool. Scott Bradley from Resolution Comics has invited me to perform art chores on one of the stories in their 'From Here to There' anthology.

Joe Sergi has written the story I'll be drawing. It's about travelling on a plane and is titled 'The Economy of Scale'.

I've also heard that friend of LOST IN THE AUTOGANZFELD Christopher Barker has written one of the stories which is about train travel. See more of Chris' work here: FictionChris

Here's the first page of a story I've done for Short Stack #2.

Short Stack is being published by Angry Gnome Comics - A.K.A. - Shawn and Stephanie Gabborin. As well as Short Stack, they are currently putting out Victor Season and Palm Reader.

The idea behind Short Stack is 1 writer, 13 artists. Each story is two pages long, all written by Shawn.

Here's my 'effort' for the War Heroes Cover Competition that's currently going on over at Wizard.

With it not being coloured I don't think I stand a chance. There are already some all singing, all dancing fully coloured beauties up on the site that put mine to shame.

As you may have guessed colour is not my thing. I have nothing against it, in fact I would be all about the colour it's just that right now my colouring skills suck pretty hard.

I'll be scouring tutorials and forums for tips and hints on colouring but no doubt it'll take some time. If anyone out there is a colourist and would like to share their wisdom - don't be a stranger!

Having said that though I am rather pleased with the 'strength' (for want of a better word) of these drawings in their bare ass black and white glory.

Lettering is also something I'm picking up (again very slowly). There is a Hell of a lot to colouring and lettering. The Girlfriend keeps bol****ing me for crap use of text... she's way more up on the whole graphics thing than me.

Thought I should also mention: Those Who Desire Darkness has been written but I am playing with a lot of the text and spacing with regards to how it lays out on the page. The first three pages are done but I'm having problems on the last few. This is why there is no text on the pages I've posted.

Bank holiday weekend starts here: I'm off to play GTA 4.

I've posted this rough layout and all of the sketches in the previous two posts (there are many more but these are the choice ones) because I always enjoy looking at working drawings. You get more of a clue as to what the artist was thinking and deliberating upon. It's not like looking at the final product as this gives way more of an insight into the choices that were made.

I also think it's insane how different the sketches often look to the final piece no matter how tiny the alterations.
